About The Event

Sons of Tangaroa Spearfishing Club - Annual Spearfishing Competition Rules

Date: Friday the 18th & Saturday 19th February 2022

Weigh In shut-off: 4.00pm Saturday

Location: SOT HQ, Tauranga fish and dive club, 60 Cross Road, Tauranga 3110, New Zealand Competition Area: Lottin Point to Coromandel

Target Species:

Target Species are: Snapper, Kingfish, Trevally,  Boarfish, Kahawai, John Dory, Pink Mao Mao, Blue Mao Mao, Butterfish and Crayfish (as a bonus species). You may only shoot & weigh 6 of the 10 species. Crayfish will count as a bonus species in addition to the 6 species weighed in, and will count a fixed 50 points.

Weigh In and Scoring

Weigh in begins from 3pm. All fish shot on the Saturday must be presented to the weigh in station by 4 pm

Fish shot on Friday must be digitally weighed in on the day. Any species weighed in on Friday may not be replaced by another on Saturday.

All fish to be weighted gutted, gills in.

Each team can present only one fish per target species. Presented fish must be of legal size as per  Fisheries NZ requirements.

Scoring will be 100 points per species entered, with the heaviest receiving an additional 100 points and with each subsequent fish of the species recieving points based on a percentage of the heaviest weight. Eg if the heaviest snapper is 10kg and the next is 8kg, the first will receive 100 points and the 8 will receive 80 points.

Placings will be awarded by highest overall points.

1. Competition is to be completed in pairs. When in the water, divers must always be in a pair.

2. Access to fishing boundary can be via boat or from shore.

3. Each member of a team may carry one spear gun.

4. Guns must be loaded by muscular force. Cartridge type, compressed gas guns and power heads are not permitted.

5. Mask, Snorkel, Fins, Knife, Weight belt, Torch, and protective clothing may be used.

6. Flashers, Flasher rigs, Fish attraction devices may be used.

7. Each team must tow one Red, Yellow or Orange coloured float. This equipment must be fitted with a divers flag of at least 15 x 20cm and be self-righting.

8. Spare gear may be carried. (Caution: No guns or shafts may be carried hanging vertically in the water)

9. Divers under 18 years must be accompanied by an adult

10. The use of scuba tank is not permitted in the competition.

11. Any fish caught inside the local marine reserves will mean all persons on the boat concerned will be disqualified.

General House Keeping:

Please Bring a cool store, there are no cooler facilities at the clubhouse. Filleting tables will be available

Please park boats on the next to the clubrooms. There are surveillance cameras operating, but we advise that you lock/secure all easily removable gear in your vehicles.

Due to the Weather conditions there may be an aggregation of teams in sheltered areas, please undertaker the competition in good humour and do your best not to impede nearby teams. Please be aware of the covid 19 restrictions and act in a safe and sensible manner.
